i spent four days last week in an office. i tucked my shirt in (on two of the days at least) and took a temp job. i was covering for a librarian, a woman who was headed to hawaii to celebrate her best friend's thirtieth birthday. the position was at an architecture firm, so the library had a lot of blueprints, flooring samples, and binders full of brochures for faucets and lighting fixtures.
i didn't really learn alot about architecture or engineering. i always thought that architecture was a result of grand ideas. i read my venturi in college. misty-eyed men in oddly shaped glasses discussing the meaning of the human condition and the place that buildings occupy in our intricately constructed world-view. not so much. it turns out architecture is mostly about moving this window here and shaving two inches off of this counter-top because the client thinks he might bump himself on it.
the real trip for me was washing my nice shirts and doing something other than hang around the house and look for a job, cook, or otherwise keep busy. the head starts to spin when you've been unemployed for a while, so escape is welcome. even if it's what most would call dull work. stacking, filing, answering the phones. that sort of thing. i found it calming every now and then.
but there's always another way to escape, and today i'm back to walking around the mission with the ipod. i grilled up some veggie burgers for me and my lady, had a pabst blue ribbon, watched most of the giants game.
i got a chance to catch up on my cycling news, and it was an interesting day of sorts. tyler hamilton tested positive for a homologous blood transfusion. the tests are flawed and may be innacurate, but the sticky part is that he tested positive on two different tests. one in august at the olympics, and one last week at the vuelta a espana. oh, and he didn't drop out of the vuelta because of stomach problems, unless of course he was upsetting his own stomach with worry... or needles full of drugs! kidding.
jay says "if tyler is guilty then the whole sport is dirty." i am with him on that one, everybody is dirty. except for alessandro petacchi! andiamo petacchi!
